Daily Management Issues

The daily handover ward round at 0830hrs is attended by the night Registrars, the 4 day Registrars and intensive care specialists , ACNM's and social worker.

The night registrar responsible for each patient will present each case, which will include:

  • A summary of the sequence of events leading to intensive care admission and since admission.
  • Progress and significant events during the last 24 hours.
  • Current status A, B, C, Other

Important decisions regarding patient discharge and specialist investigations are made at this meeting and it is important that registrars have a good understanding of the patient status.

Following the handover round at 0930hrs there is an x-ray meeting.

This is followed by a consultant led bedside round.

FAST HUG (Feeding, Analgesia, Sedation etc) is an aide-memoire that describes interventions and evaluations that have been demonstrated to benefit critically ill patients that are often overlooked when looking after a complex critically ill patient.

During the morning bedside round each patient should have each component of the FAST HUG assessed and addressed as necessary.  Compliance with the FAST HUG is repeatedly audited and its impact on local patient outcome will be regularly presented.
