Parameters for considering Extubation


  • An acceptable neurological state exists: ie the patient is awake enough to protect and maintain their airway.

  • Assisted spontaneous breathing with pressure support of 5cm H2O

  • The spontaneous respiratory rate is less than 30 breaths per minute

  • The patient is stable with on FiO2 40%o with PaO2 60mmHg and/or SpO2 90%

  • PEEP is between 5 and 10cm H2O

  • Haemodynamic stability exists

  • There is no prospect of a major intervention planned in the ensuing 24 hours.
