Pressure Support

In general Pressure support is utilised to overcome the imposed work of breathing and for this purpose should be initially set at 5cm H2O for all patients.

Should spontaneous effort not be sufficient to achieve an appropriate sized tidal volume, or the work of breathing is such that undue effort is necessary for a patient to maintain spontaneous ventilatory effort, then pressure support may be increased up to 15cm H2O.
