Paediatric Patients in the Christchurch ICU

While not a PICU, the Christchurch ICU does look after children on a regular basis.  There are between 40-50 Paedeatric admissions to our unit each year.  These patients are looked after in conjunction with their admitting paediatrician and team.  The paediatric anaesthetists are also available to provide support 24 hours a day.  There is a dedicated group of ICU nurses who care for these patients.  Approximately 1/3 of our admissions will be transferred to Starship Hospital PICU.

The majorities of our paediatric admissions are trauma related or have a medical illness (seizures, CAP).  Most of them will be ventilated.

Infants under 5kg will be accepted into NICU, and there is a paediatric HDU on Ward 22 which looks after some children, particularly post elective surgery, or who need NIV.

In general, the care of paediatric patients follows that of adult patients, with some differences that it is important to be aware of.
