Hospitals & Services
The Mental Health Clinical Research Unit (CRU) is a joint venture between the Canterbury District Health Board’s Specialist Mental Health Service (SMHS) and the University Department of Psychological Medicine. The purpose of the CRU is to provide high quality research that will improve the way care is provided to people using mental health services.
Work undertaken ranges from randomised controlled trials of clinical interventions to projects that evaluate care for specific areas of concern (e.g metabolic disorders). The CRU has a particular interest in psychotherapy interventions of specific mental illness. It has completed projects that looked at psychotherapy for bipolar disorder, eating disorders and depression and current projects investigating psychotherapy for bipolar disorder and evaluating interventions for PTSD that have resulted from Canterbury’s earthquakes.
