Rural Hospitals & Facilities

​​​​​​​​Rural Health Services provides a range of health services available to the wider Canterbury region. The eight hospitals from which the services are based are located across Canterbury, with Ashburton Hospital being the largest and central point for the other smaller hospitals.

Akaroa Hospital

Akaroa Health CentreAkaroa Hospital is closed due to earthquake damage, all hospital buildings have been demolished and are no longer in use. Akaroa ​Health Centre​ operates from a temporary building at 110 Rue Jolie.

They are open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday for routine Clinic appointments. 

At the present time, pending new developments, Canterbury DHB leases some beds at Pompallier House Rest Home on Rue Viard, in Akaroa.


Akaroa is on Banks Peninsula, 1.5 hours' travel time from Christchurch.

Only 35 minutes drive from Christchurch on highway to the West Coast via Arthurs Pass.

With two local general practitioners in Darfield, medical services are readily available and the midwives support the maternity service.

Medical, surgical rehabilitation, carer support, continuing care of the elderly – 8 beds. Maternity - 2 beds.

Lincoln Maternity offers the best of both worlds - a peaceful rural setting, yet only minutes from Christchurch.  Situated on the city side of Lincoln township, the hospital is especially convenient for families from all southern suburbs and from throughout the Selwyn District.  Lincoln Maternity hospital is certified to top healthcare standards, providing you with the assurance of quality service and care. Following a vaginal birth, transfer is within 12 hours, caesarean sections transfer within 24 hours.

Lincoln midwives offer skilled support to new mothers / families in those very early learning days. They will assist and support you while you become confident with feeding and caring of your baby.

Lincoln Hospital is an accredited Baby Friendly hospital.

Oxford Hospital

The Oxford Hospital was built in 1920 as a maternity and general hospital. Today the hospital has 15 beds, providing a variety of health services for the Oxford community and surrounding districts including general medical with four beds for convalescing post surgery, acute admissions and palliative care; longstay care with eight beds for people who require permanent hospital level care and three beds for  short term hospital level relief care for people whose family or care givers need a break.

Other services: Meals on Wheels, day care, equipment hire, needs assessment and service co-ordination, assessment and treatment of outpatients.

Tuarangi Home

Tuarangi Home is a dedicated specialised home providing continuing care, including rest home and long stay dementia care for the elderly who require nursing care. This 37 bed home is centrally situated  in Cameron Street, Ashburton. 

Other services which patients at Ashburton Hospital may access are available for Tuarangi Home residents.

Waikari Hospital is located in Waikari village, one hour's drive north of Christchurch on State Highway 1 and inland from Waipara.

The hospital is set in beautiful grounds overlooking the alps. Waikari Hospital meets the needs of the local community as well as covering a large rural district including continuing care of the elderly, general medical, surgical rehabilitation, carer support, respite care. Maternity services are not available at Waikari Hospital.
