Health hub consultation to start

Friday March 30, 2012

The North Canterbury community has the opportunity over the next month to assist the Canterbury District Health Board with developing a new health hub in the area.

Carolyn Gullery, CDHB General Manager, Planning and Funding, says the proposed health hub will support and complement the existing general practice and community services.

"We want to make sure that this new hub will meet the health needs of the local community so we are really keen to receive feedback about our draft concept plan for the hub,"

A focus of the new health hub is improved access to health care through providing new services closer to home, Carolyn says.

"A person-centred approach is required to ensure our health system is sustainable.  We want to make it easier for people to access health care and ensure better integration and coordination of services in the North Canterbury area," she says.

Feedback from key community groups including community leaders, health services, Rangiora Hospital staff, the Rural Canterbury Primary Health Organisation and local general practitioners was taken on board and used in the development of the draft concept plan for the hub.

Public meetings will be held in Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Amberley and a survey will also be available at local libraries and council offices in the Waimakariri and Hurunui districts.  People can also have their say on-line.  Further information about the survey will be publicised next week.

The proposed health hub may include:

  • Inpatient beds for respite, rehabilitation, long term hospital level care and general medicine
  • Maternity services including a primary birthing facility
  • Consult rooms for pre-and postnatal visits with midwives.
  • Enhanced radiology services including X-ray and ultrasound
  • Laboratory services
  • Outpatient specialist clinics e.g. for Orthopaedics, Cardiology , Oncology, Paediatrics

The Government has estimated the cost of the health hub could be around $7 million with a planned completion date of June 2013.

Responses to the survey about the North Canterbury Health Hub will remain confidential, Carolyn says
